Forest School

All children at Craiglockhart have the opportunity to take part in Forest School from Nursery right up to P7. Miss Gater is our trained Forest School Leader and takes us out come rain or shine every Wednesday to Craiglockhart Hill.

Forest Schools demonstrates success with children of all ages who visit the same local woodlands on a regular basis and through play, have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, how to identify risk and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others. Forest Schools also teaches woodland skills and tool use, campfire cooking and has obvious health benefits. Activities may also include woodland and animal studies, natural art activities, shelter building and writing. Forest School has a strong ‘child led’ element where children have the opportunity for natural play and exploration. Studies into the benefits of Forest School show increased concentration and motivation as well as it being great fun!  It is wonderful to see the children in a different environment; some of our less confident children come out of their shells and others are natural born leaders but the truly great thing is watching the team work and enthusiasm that comes from being part of nature and getting messy!
